Creating the Future for a Cleaner Environment Here and Now

RCeNeM d.o.o., a partner company of Steklarna Hrastnik, was a part of a consortium of three companies successfully responding to the call for tenders published by SPIRIT Slovenia (Public Agency for Entrepreneurship, Internationalization, Foreign Investments and Technology). The chosen project will see RCeNeM d.o.o. and partners develop innovative technology with the aim of minimising the use of fossil fuels (natural gas) as the energy products for melting glass, thus considerably reducing the CO2 footprint. This will be achieved by replacing a share of the fossil fuels with hydrogen, which produces minimal carbon emissions. The hydrogen used will be obtained from renewable sources. The pilot presentation of the new system is projected to take place in the Steklarna Hrastnik production plant.

The participation of a Steklarna Hrastnik partner company in the project for optimising the energy conversion for reducing the share of fossil fuels with hydrogen in industrial glass melting processes is just another activity in the series of efforts for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. To date the tableware glass unit has utilised innovative solutions and the most up-to-date technology to reduce CO2 emissions by 30%, while the packaging glass unit has reduced them by 10%. "Introducing the most up-to-date energy-efficient methods, technological processes and solutions for reducing our environmental impact is a key strategic factor when choosing the technologies to be used in production. This is the only way to ensure that we are continuously reducing our impact on the local environment, optimising our technological processes and simultaneously maintaining a competitive position," said Peter Čas, General Director of Steklarna Hrastnik, adding: "We have demanding buyers in the premium and super premium segments whose strategies include sustainable development. These buyers will only deal with manufacturers with a similar sustainable orientation – an orientation that requires not just investments in HR and the social environment, but also constant investments in innovative technology. Our project is a part of that." Buyers repeatedly conduct due diligence diligent to ensure that Steklarna Hrastnik meets the demanding criteria.

With the new project, Steklarna Hrastnik reaffirms its innovative and professional approach, as the project plans for a brand new, technically perfect solution. Together with their project partners, they firmly believe that it will be possible to apply the solution to other large melting facilities and energy-intensive production processes in other industries.
